Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova is the daughter of Chari, a builder, and Saadat, a high school music teacher. She began playing tennis at the age of 10 when her grandmother took her to a local athletic club.
She also played basketball as a youth and was asked to play for a national junior team, but declined to focus on tennis. She was part of the East Asia Grand Slam Development Fund through the International Tennis FUnd as well as the Tashkent State Fund.
At age 18, she was invited to be a member of the national tennis team.
She studied International Tourism at Tashkent State University of Economics. She collects giraffes - stuffed animals as well as wooden ones - and at 6-feet, 3-inches, is the tallest player on the WTA tour.
