Currently ranked 216th in the world, American teenager Beatrice Capra burst into the WTA tennis limelight by reaching the third round of the US Open in 2010.
Just 18 years old, the amateur player began 2010 ranked 831st and largely playing ITF events. She lost in the qualifying rounds of Miami, Ponte Vedra Beach and Stanford before receiving a wild card for the US Open.
Entering the tournament ranked No. 371, she defeated 95th-ranked Karolina Sprem in the first round, then shocked 20th-ranked Aravane Rezai in the second round, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Her performance got her a third round draw with former champion Maria Sharapova, who made short work of the teenager, 6-0, 6-0.
Nevertheless, Capra earned a whopping $48,903 for the appearance -- her previous high in 2010 earnings was $1,520 -- and jumped 160 spots in the WTA rankings.
