Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro is the daughter of father Jose Luis, a professional handball player, and mother Lali, a former gymnast who is now a teacher. Her brother is Jose Suarez Navarro. Carla began playing at the age of nine under the encouragement of her mother, and moved from the Canary Islands to Barcelona in 2007 to begin training at the Pro-Ab Team Tennis Academy. She admires fellow players Steffi Graf, Lleyton Hewitt, Justine Henin and basketball great Michael Jordan. Her favorite tournaments to play in are Bogota and Roland Garros.
