Currently ranked No. 6 in the world, Russia’s Elena Dementieva has 22 career WTA titles – 16 as a singles player, and has represented the Russian Olympic team three times.
She achieved her highest singles rank on April 6, 2009, at No. 3, and reached No. 5 in doubles on April 14, 2003. She has reached the finals of two Grand Slam events as a singles player.
She made her pro debut in 1995 on the ITF Circuit in Moscow and won her first singles title in 1996. In 1999, she finished in the top 100 for the first time, and made it to the third round of the US Open. She finished in the top 20 in 2000 and won the silver medal at the Summer Olympics, falling to Venus Williams in the championship match.
She lost to Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals of the US Open, then rose in the rankings from No. 25 to No. 17.
In 2002, she reached the US Open doubles finals but was defeated, then improved her game even more in 2003, finishing in the top 10 and winning three Tour singles titles. In 2004, she made the finals of both the French and US Open.
She lost to Anastasia Myskina in the French, marking the first time a Grand Slam singles final has been an all-Russian affair. The US Open followed suit, with Dementieva losing out to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
