Latvia's Ernests Gulbis is the son of Ainars, an investment businessman and former basketball player, and Milena, a dramatic theatre actress. He has three sisters - Elina, a lawyer; and Laura and Monika, both tennis players. He also has a younger brother, Kirstops, who has designs on being a professional golfer. In addition, Gulbis' grandfather was a started on the Soviet Union national basketball team which won the European Championship. He was introduced to tennis at age five when his grandmother took him onto the court. He speaks Russian, Latvian and English and also participates in soccer, basketball and hockey.
