Florian Mayer is the son of Bernd, a teacher, and Sabine, who manages a shop. He has one younger brother. He began playing tennis at the age of five and trained as a junior with the German Tennis Federation. He is a soccer fan and an avid supporter of Bayern Munich. Growing up, he idolized Boris Becker and Pete Sampras. He trains at Tennis Base in Oberhaching near Munich and is coached by Tobias Summerer.
