China's Jie Zheng was born in Cheng Du, a city of 14 million and the capital of the Sichaun province. Her first tennis memory was watching a match between Monica Seles and Steffi Graf, sand she took up the sport at age 10 after older sister Jie had done the same. She is the daughter of Shu Kai Zheng and Zhi Bin Lei. She is a big fan of athletic competition who also enjoys playing golf, table tennis and badminton. Jie lists her idols as her parents and grandparents. In 2000, she graduated from the Si Chuan Sports Academy. She is coached by her husband, Zhang Yu, who played professionally from 1995-2005, playing 16 matches on the ATP tour in that time.
