Former Top 5 American player Jimmy Arias won five singles titles in his career, and was coached by legendary instructor Nick Bollettieri.
He also teamed up with Andrea Jaeger to win the 1982 French Open Mixed Doubles title. Arias is most well-known currently as a commentator for the Tennis Channel and ESPN International. He also provided coverage for NBC during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Arias turned pro in 1980, winning one title in 1982 and four more in 1983, easily his best year. He was the runner-up in 11 other tournaments, as well as one doubles tournament.
Arias entered the Top 10 at No. 6 to open the 1984 season, and remained in the Top 10 until Nov. 26 of that year. He remained in the Top 20 until March of 1985. All five of his titles came on clay, where he racked up 144 of his career 286 wins.
Arias broke through for his first title in 1982, claiming the crown at Tokyo. He also reached the third round at both the French Open and the US Open. He lost in the final at Washington D.C. to Ivan Lendl, and at Indianapolis to Jose Higueras. In 1983,
Arias won four titles on clay, two in May -- at Florence and Rome , one in Indianapolis in August and one in September in Palermo. He also reached the finals at Washington and Boston, losing both to Jose-Luis Clerc, and reached the semifinals of the US Open, falling to Ivan Lendl.
