Juan Martin Del Potro was born to parents Daniel, a semi-pro rugby player in Argentina now working as a veterinarian, and Patricia, a teacher. He began playing tennis at the age of seven thanks to childhood idol, Pete Sampras. Del Potro says that if he was not a tennis player he would seek a career as an architect. In addition to Spanish, he also speaks a little Italian and English. He is also a big supporter of Boca Juniors soccer team in Argentina in addition to Juventus in Italy.
Del Potro considers hard courts to be his best surface and enjoyed success in juniors, winning the 14s division at the Orange Bowl in 2002. His first ATP title came in Stuttgart in 2008, defeating Richard Gasquet in the final. Part of his prize for the tournament was a CLK Mecedes-Benz, which he gave to his sister Julieta.
