Ranked No. 111 in the world at the end of 2010, Italy’s Maria Elena Camerin has finished five years ranked in the Top 100 among singles players and has three career WTA doubles titles.
After debuting in 1997, Camerin first cracked the Top 100 in 2003, finishing the year ranked 99th. She achieved the status in large part by reaching the main draw at the French Open, the second round at Wimbledon and the second round at the US Open.
The following season, 2004, would turn out to be her best as she ended the year as the No. 43-ranked player. She climbed through the rankings steadily, reaching the second round at Dubai, the quarterfinals at Casablanca and the quarterfinals at Stockholm. Her big push came in the autumn as she reached the semifinals at Bali, upsetting No. 2 Anastasia Myskina in the second round and the semifinals at Hasselt.
After dropping back to No. 96 in 2005, she rebounded to 54th in 2006 by reaching the third round of the Australian Open and the finals at Portoroz. That appears to have been her last good year, as Camerin fell to 99th in 2007 and has been out of the Top 100 every year since.
