Currently ranked No. 58 in the world, Germany’s Michael Berrer achieved a career-best ranking of 42nd during the 2010 season.
Berrer turned pro in 1999 at age 19, but did not crack the ATP top 100 rankings until 2007. That season he reached the main draw of the Australian Open by winning three qualifying matches, and made deep runs at several Challenger events. At Hertogenbosch, he made the quarterfinals, upsetting No. 17 Guillermo Canas in the process, to move up to No. 94, his first time in the Top 100. He followed that up with a first-round upset of Albert Montanes at Wimbledon, and reachd the quarterfinals at Los Angeles, the third round at Washington D.C., the second round at the US Open and the semifinals at Moscow to finish the year 57th.
He fell back out of the Top 100 in 2008, but regained his form the following season. He reached the second round of the Australian Open while ranked No. 134, and re-entered the Top 100 after winning the Challengers at Bratislava and Salzburg, finishing the year 74th.
His strong play to end 2009 carried over into 2010 as he reached the finals at Zagreb, taking down Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki in the process. Berrer reached the quarterfinals at Dubai and the third round at Monte Carlo to reach a career-best No. 42 in the world. He went on to reach the semifinals at Vienna with wins over two Top 30 players, but an upset in the first round at Paris followed by no play the rest of the year saw him drop back to No. 66.
