Rafael Nadal Parera was born to parents Sebastian and Ana Maria and has one younger sister Maria Isabel. He began playing tennis at the age of four, and despite being right-handed, learned to play left-handed by his uncle, Toni. Another of his uncles, Miguel Angel Nadal, was a professional soccer player who played for teams such as FC Barcelona, Real Mallorca, and the Spanish national team. He won his first ATP match in his hometown of Mallorca at age 15 years, 10 months in 2002.
In October of 2010, the Rafael Nadal Tennis School was opened in Anantpur, India. The school hosts tournaments in addition to placing an emphasis on education as well as tennis training.
