Beginning at three years old, Stephanie "Steffi" Maria Graf, born to Heidi and Peter Graf, started to playing tennis in Mannheim, Germany to become one of the best in the world and German-sports icon.
Considered one of greatest of all time, Graf achieved 23 Grand Slam titles and a unique Golden Grand Slam (all four majors and an Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year). She was originally coached by her father but when she went professional she coached with Pavel Slozil (1986-1991) and Heinz Guenthardt (1992-1999). She competed for 18 years from 1982-1999 and was the only woman to win 22 major-singles titles in the Open Era divided evenly across all four.
She is known for her all-surface game and proficiency, but she liked grass courts the most. She won 109 tournaments total. She finished eight different seasons at No. 1 in the World from 1987 to 1990 and 1993 and 1996, a record total of a record-breaking 377 total weeks. She kept this place for 186 weeks until March 10, 1991,a record unsurpassed by any other player, man or woman.
Between March 1988 and September 1990 she set a hard court record with 82 straight victories. She never slowed down and in 45 major tournaments towards the end of her career between 1985 and 1999, she made it to the quarterfinals 44 times, made 31 finals appearances, and won 22 crowns. She was known for her strong forehand and one-handed backhand.
She retired at age 30 as the World No. 3 and entered the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004. She married fellow-tennis-champion, Andre Agassi in 2001 and has two children with him, Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle. Continuing to give back, she heads up charity foundations, “World Wide Fund (WWF)” and “Children for Tomorrow” with projects going on in Hamburg, Capetown, Kosovo, Mozambique, and Eritrea.
As a child, she considered becoming vet, a documentary filmmaker or photographer (she currently does photography as a hobby) and now is a full-time mother. Her hero is Nelson Mandela, who she has personally met.
