Ranked No. 82 in the world, Lu burst onto the professional tennis scene at Wimbledon in June of 2010 with his upset of fifth-seeded
Andy Roddick of the United States.
Lu defeated Roddick 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 9-7 to become the first Asian man to reach a major quarterfinal since 1995.
Lu has one two career titles on tour. Lu made his Davis Cup debut in 2001 and became the first player from Chinese Taipei to break into the Top 100 in 2004.
He qualified for Wimbledon in 2005 and lost in the first round. In 2008, he rose to No. 2 in Asia and went 38-9 in Challenger level play with a 38-9 match record.
He improved from No. 109 to No. 72 and posted the biggest win of his career when he defeated No. 6
Andy Murray in the third round of the Beijing Summer Olympics.
In 2009, he reached the third round of the Australian Open, his best finish ever at a major. He then reached No. 55 in the world, but did not win consecutive matches for the rest of the season at tour events.
He slid back down to No. 126 before rallying to finish 98th in the world by winning the Chuncheon Challenger title in Korea.
In 2010, Lu lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Ireland’s Louk Sorensen, and fell to Roddick in the round of 64 at Indian Wells.
He followed that up with a win at Athens, defeating Germany’s Rainer Schuettler in the final, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. He lost in the first round of the French Open to
Ivan Ljubicic.
Personal
Began playing tennis at age eight. Coached by Dirk Hordoff since 2003 and has worked with former ATP pro Mark Woodforde. Has one brother, who is a computer engineer.
