Began playing at age 7 with a cousin who lived in Germany. His father Zdenko and his mother Koviljka are retired. Has a strong passion for soccer, following AC Milan and Croatia, and supporting Kaka and Robinho. Is coached by Australian Bob Brett. Has three brothers - two older than him (Vinko and Goran) and a third who is younger, and whom Cilic calls "the most inspirational person because of his good advice." Grew up admiring countrymen Goran Ivanisevic and Ivan Ljubicic. Practices at Bob Brett Academy in San Remo near the French-Italian border.
