Roger Federer was born to parents Robert and Lynette, both of whom had worked for a pharmaceutical company. He has an older sister Diana. Began playing tennis at the age of eight. Federer enjoys table tennis, sitting on the beach, playing cards, and following hometown soccer team, FC Basel.
In 2003, started Roger Federer Foundation to support children in South Africa and promotes sports to the younger generation. He carried the Swiss flag in opening ceremonies of 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. In addition to his many charitable contributions, he helped organize exhibition events to assist UNICEF in generating proceeds to help victims of natural disaster. Federer was awarded the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2006.
He is married to Mirka (Vavrinec), a former WTA player. They met at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and were married on April 11, 2009. The two have twin daughters, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose, born on July 23, 2009.
