Tomas Berdych was born to parents Martin, a train engineer, and Hana, a doctor. He began playing tennis at the age of five at the tennis center in his hometown of Valasske Mezirici. After winning the Czech Republic 12-and-under junior title, he moved to Prostejov to find better coaching and more competition. In an effort to keep ties to his old school, he would regularly commute home.
At the age of 16, he won the 18-and-under national title in Parovbice, a title formerly won by Ivan Lendl. His favorite sport to follow is hockey and is an avid Detroit Red Wings fan.
Berdych enjoys meeting Czech players that are competing in the NHL, as well as the 1998 Olympic gold medal team.
His favorite surface is hard courts and considers his forehand and serve his best shots. His first ATP-level title actually came on clay in Palermo in 2004 where he defeated David Ferrer in the semifinals and Filippo Volandri in the final.
