Day 3 Preview

Our match of the day pick: Nadal vs. Gasquet

Still don’t know why this match is not being played under the lights on Ashe but it promises to be a good one. Nadal, sporting a Federer-inspired new hair cut takes on a newly reinstated Gasquet. If memory serves correct, not too long ago Gasquet was dubbed “Baby Federer” by many of us. Although his career thus far has paled in comparison, the backhand is a thing of beauty and he plays the game with quintessential French flair.  Let’s hope Gasquet shows up to play.

Our blue plate “upset” special: Bartoli vs. Clijsters

No one really would consider this an upset by any means but for the sake of paying some respect to the WTA ranking system, let’s call it that. Bartoli’s DIY game has no shortage of quirkiness. She played in her 1st round but unlucky for her, she was rewarded with a second round encounter with a resurgent Clijsters.

Catch them while you can:

If you have time tomorrow, go catch the JCF vs. Santoro match out on court 11. This is Fabrice’s last year on tour and the French showman will always always but on a great show!  Allez Fabrice. One of the networks should really put together a top 10 highlight reel of Santoro points.

Speaking of retirement, Safin is playing in his last US Open. He plays Jurgen Melzer on Armstrong.  Love him or hate him, he strikes the cleanest ball you will ever see.

A Canadian on Ashe! Our home girl Wozniak plays 17th seed Amelie Mauresmo. Courts are playing fast this year; hope we see more attacking tennis from Amelie.

Go Clijsters! Great to see her playing so well so soon on her comeback -- she's striking the serve harder than she did when she won the Open a few years back, and it's so refreshing to see a player on the women's side who employs angles, finesse, and strategy instead of relying on blunt power alone. Welcome back, Kim, and good luck!

Rafa Nadal completely dominated the match. It was one-sided since the start. Juan Martin Del Potro is playing excellent tennis against a quality player like Juan Monaco. I hope Juan Martin takes out Andy Murray!
