Chardy Prefers Federer, but Thinks Nadal Will Win More Slams

Speaking to reporters on Sunday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Frenchman Jeremy Chardy spent more time talking about Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer than himself after his 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over Igor Sijsling.

Can Nadal Catch Federer in All-Time Grand Slam Title? Djokovic Weighs In

The thoughtful 27-year-old from Pau, France didn't seem to mind, and ended up making some insightful remarks on the two tennis icons.

“I prefer the game of Federer,” Chardy opined, “because I think he can play every shot. He can play every shot with his racquet... He can play high, he can play flat. I think he has a lot of options. For everybody, I think it's tough to control every shot like he can do it.”

Chardy may prefer Federer's aesthetics, but he's a big fan of the Nadal's mental fortitude as well. “Nadal for me is the best fighter ever,” he said. “I think he has the best mentality. He has a lot of respect for every player. When I see that, for me it's really good person because he can play against everybody. He has a lot of respect for [all players]. He will fight on the court. He will never play light because he play against someone No. 100 or someone No. 2, he will play and fight exactly the same on the court. I think for every player we have to watch him, to try to make the same.”

The Frenchman also chimed in on the question of which player will ultimately end up with more Grand Slams. He's going with Nadal. “Yeah, I think [Nadal is going to pass Federer]," he said. "I think the difference between Roger and him, he won the first Grand Slam younger. Nadal is only 27, so he has a lot of years to play. I think on clay court, he can win a lot.”
