10 Things: Elias Ymer



Elias Ymer is a new name on the growing list of "Generation Next" players. In fact, he just earned a big win over a fellow 19-year-old also making a name for himself on the ATP Tour. Hailing from a country with a strong tennis history, Ymer is quickly becoming a player to watch this season. Learn more about this rising talent.

ATP: Nadal Wins Barcelona Opener Over Almagro

1. Vital Statistics: Ymer was born April 10, 1996 in Skara, Sweden. He currently resides in Stockholm.

2. Early Days: Ymer first learned about tennis from his father who was a professional runner from Ethiopia. After watching Michael Chang play tennis, his father decided to introduce the sport to his children. Ymer has two younger brothers Mikael and Rafael who also play the sport.

3. Pro Debut: Ymer played his first ATP event as a wildcard at the 2013 Swedish Open in Bastad. He played the event again in 2014 and that year he beat Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round to earn his first ever ATP win.

4. Grand Slam Glory: At the 2015 Australian Open, Ymer successfully qualified for his first ever Grand Slam main draw. He lost in five sets in the first round to Japan's Go Soeda.


5. Barcelona Best: Ymer faced off against fellow 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios in the second round of Barcelona. After saving two match points, Ymer pulled off the 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(7) upset win. He next faces David Ferrer.


6. In His Own Words: "Playing Nick is always going to be so tough. He's the one who showed us it's possible to play against the big guys. He inspired me a lot when he reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year. I know him well…in juniors we played together all the time. It's the first time I've won two matches on the ATP World Tour."

7. Idol Worship: Favorite athlete is Mike Tyson.

8. Favorite Things: Favorite tournament is the Stockholm Open. Favorite shot is his forehand and his favorite surface is clay.

9. Goals: Currently ranked No. 192, Ymer aims to break into the top 100.
