Serena Williams Calls for Fed Cup Format Changes

Echoing the sentiments of so many professional tennis players, 19-time major champion Serena Williams has said her piece about the rigors of trying mate a successful tour schedule with Fed Cup appearances.

Fed Cup: Williams Keeps Singles Winning Streak, but Americans Fall to Italy in Brindisi

''Ideally it would be great if it was every two years, just because I want to support it all the time and I don't get to support it as much as I can because we play and train 40-45 weeks out of the year,'' Williams said during the American’s 3-2 loss to Italy, according to the AP. ''So it's kind of hard to continue to do that. Especially if you want to support your country. You feel so bad when you can't.''

Williams joins Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer among critics of the format of tennis’s international team competitions. Just last month at Indian Wells, many big ATP stars opened up on the subject.

"It's just interesting how little effort seems to be made to change the competition. Because clearly, if every player is saying I love playing Davis Cup, but every two years they decide not to play it would suggest it probably needs changing,” Murray told reporters at a roundtable.

"If everything is perfect, fine," Nadal said. "But in the end, the ITF lies to the fans and to everybody. Last year was great because at the end of the year Roger Federer won, Wawrinka won. But Novak Djokovic didn’t play, I didn’t play."

Williams agrees, and says that re-branding could be the ticket to a better Fed Cup future. ''After a certain time you have to re-market things,'' Williams told The AP. ''I think the Fed Cup is doing great, Davis Cup obviously does great, but it's always fun to try to re-market it and just sell it to a different crowd.''
