Simona Halep Received Twitter Death Threat While Playing Stuttgart

According to the AFP world No. 3 Simona Halep received a death threat from a crazed Danish fan who has stalked the Romanian on social media for quite some time.

"I can't comment on it. I am here to play tennis,” said Halep after her quarterfinal victory over Sara Errani. “Other people will take care of it.”

According to Romanian journalist Costin Stucan, the Danish man has been an active irritant on Twitter, posting 2,000 tweets about Halep. Stucan reported that the man became irate about a phony April Fool’s tweet that said Halep had gotten engaged.

The situation is being met with caution, as it comes close to the 22nd anniversary of Monica Seles’ stabbing in Hamburg, Germany. Tennis has also endured several incidents in recent years where its security was exposed. In the French Open final in 2009 a man broke onto the court and tried to put a crown on Roger Federer’s head. In 2013 a protestor wielding a flare approached Rafael Nadal during the men’s final at Roland Garros.
