Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from a Savannah Challenger match vs. Donald Young after he “questioned the impartiality of the umpire, based on her race,” the USTA announced.

Medvedev has since apologized for his behavior, though he doesn't recall exactly what he said.

Sandy French, the chair umpire for the match, is African American as is Young.

Court-side microphones picked up Medvedev, upset by a call, telling French "I know that you are friends. I am sure about it."

Today, Medvedev apologized for his words in a Facebook post, though he says he cannot recall all the details.

"I would not be able to contest the umpire’s decision but in the affect period I do not have a clear memory of what I actually said," Medvedev wrote in his Facebook post. "I let the emotion take over and lost my temper for which I am genuinely sorry."

Trailing 1-3 in the opening set, Medvedev held double break point when he hit a forehand down the line. The Russian thought the shot was good and walked to his court-side seat believing he had broken serve.

French checked the mark, called the ball wide and told Medvedev to resume play. Medvedev, who apparently believed the chair umpire checked the wrong mark, made some comments as he walked away from the chair umpire and toward the baseline. He subsequently lost the game.

After the ensuing changeover, tournament supervisor Keith Crossland was summoned to court. Crossland discussed the incident with Medvedev, then walked over to confer with French.

The chair umpire announced "Unsportsmanlike conduct. Default Medvedev."
