The third-seeded Austrian will play Alexander Zverev for a spot in the Munich final. Thiem is playing for his third final of the season following titles at Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

Thiem raised his record to 28-7, equaling Novak Djokovic for most victories on the ATP Tour this season. The Austrian is 12-2 on clay in 2016.
