Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Even the most biased tennis fan would find it difficult to argue with the achievements of Roger Federer this year. Two grand slams and three masters series over the space of six tournaments. It’s hard to imagine how he can do it, but he does, somehow. Of course there is always some who will doubt and insist he isn’t the best of all time, even if they know deep down that he is.

Roger has won the last 5 titles in a row at the US Open. It’s truly phenomenal. There is several people who are more than capable of lifting the trophy in Flushing Meadows, but who can get over the mental barrier that is the genius of Roger Federer? Andy Murray looked great last year and was playing great tennis until he saw “R. Federer v A. Murray” on the scoreboard on finals Sunday. He crumbled under the pressure. I personally don’t like Murrays style of play or his on court demeanor but he has done so well on the tour and is probably the most likely finalist in the second half of the draw in New York.

The final I predict is “style, class and effortless talent” v.”typical British, rude and overly cocky”.

Things are a little bit different this year, though. Roger is the proud father of twin girls, but you would honestly swear nothing has changed, or if anything, he has played better. His forehand in particular is looking amazing. He is playing like the Federer of two or three years ago. Murray is also showing us some great tennis, taking home a couple of masters series himself already this year and showing us he may be worthy of having the biography that was released all too soon.

Even though the US Open didn’t start yet, the final is shaping up to be a 5 set thriller.

And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
