A Hairy Situation

Seriously, just when you’ve thought you’ve seen everything that there is to see on a tennis court—think Marinko Matosevic knocking down Rafael Nadal’s water bottles or Marcos Baghdatis smashing nearly all of his racquets just for laughs during a changeover—something like this happens.

What? Racquet stuck in a ponytail? That is just beyond strange and into supernatural. Yet, it really did happen, and when it did, Caroline Wozniacki really did try to hit a backhand anyway.

She didn’t make the backhand but she won the match, 6-3, 6-4, over Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

As crazy as it sounds, this is apparently nothing new to Wozniacki.

“Actually it used to happen when I didn't braid my hair,” Wozniacki said. “That's why I started braiding it. Once it gets to a certain length sometimes it can get stuck in the arm or the racquet. It's a first, you know, when it's braided that it's been stuck that good in my racquet. You know, I still tried to hit the ball. Almost took my head off.”

Wozniacki will square off with Andrea Petkovic in the third round of the US Open.
