19th-ranked Victoria Azarenka will skip due to a shoulder issue, while 26th-ranked Eugenie Bouchard has been forced out with an ab strain. Sara Errani and Daniela Hantuchova also withdrew.

Neither player has played since Wimbledon, but both are expected to be back in time for the Rogers Cup in Toronto next week.

The Citi Open still features six Top 30 talents, including top-seeded Ekaterina Makarova, second-seeded Sam Stosur and third-seeded Belinda Bencic.
