Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Kicking a tennis ball is usually well received during a tension-filled match. Football skills are always looked upon favorably by the fans, and it’s a good chance for a player to break the tension and show off his or her athleticism at the same time. It’s also a good trick to use for a player that is clearly not the crowd favorite in a match—it’s a way to drum up some crowd support. It’s basically win-win. But it’s different with umpires. That’s made painfully clear here as Andy Murray nearly thunks umpire Damien Dumusois in the noggin with his errant cross (see video above) during his semifinal with Milos Raonic on Saturday night in Cincinnati.

Murray made solid contact with the ball but maybe cut it a little too close to the goal. You think?

Full credit to Dumusois, who calmly gave Murray the death stare and didn’t say a word.
