Second Serve

NEW YORK—Stan Wawrinka knows how dangerous Fernando Verdasco can be.

The Spanish left-hander swept Wawrinka in their last meeting on the grass of Queen's Club in June.

US Open: Live Blog, Day 2

The third-seeded Swiss wasted little time imposing his game in today's Queens rematch.

Wawrinka did not drop serve dispatching Verdasco, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-4.

The two-time US Open semifinalist has reached at least the quarterfinals for three consecutive years and spoke like a man planning to go further this time.

"For sure it's different than few years ago. Everything is different," Wawrinka said. "I have been winning some Grand Slam, my ranking is number three in the world, I'm seeded three here. Playing first round on Ashe everything is different.

"But also for myself. My expectations for myself are more higher than before. For me, the most important thing is to focus on what I can control, all the practice, all the schedule, giving everything every practice being ready for the tournament."

Contesting his 48th straight Grand Slam tournament, Wawrinka will meet 126th-ranked Italian Alessandro Giannessi for a spot in the third round.

"Right now I know I'm ready for here, for the tournament," Wawrinka said "And now I'm going to see how I'm going to deal with the pressure, with the match, and trying to play the best I can until as far as I can."
