No wild card, no problem.

That was the mindset of 18-year-old Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov prior to this week’s U.S. Open qualifying, and he has now taken his place in the main draw after three straight wins in New York.

Shapovalov, who saw his ranking soar by over 70 spots after he became the youngest ATP player to ever reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, did not qualify for the U.S. Open on account of his ranking because his rise came after the tournament’s pre-determined deadline.

Many thought he deserved a wild card from the U.S. Open but he was not selected.

Shapovalov made his qualification official with a 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jan Satral on Friday.

He will make his U.S. Open debut when he faces Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the first round. "It feels incredible. I dream to play in these big tournaments, so to be able to qualify for one of the Grand Slams is a really big privilege for me."

Shapovalov made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon where he lost to Jerzy Janowicz in four set as a wild card.
