Cibulkova: You Cannot Be Serious

NEW YORK—Dominika Cibulkova channeled John McEnroe with her own "you cannot be serious" moment.

Cibulkova was hit with a two-point penalty for returning to the court one minute late following the 10-minute break after the second set of her 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4 US Open second-round victory over Su-Wei Hsieh

The former Australian Open finalist was not happy with the call.

"Then they told me, Okay, it's nine minutes. You have to go," Cibulkova said. "I was, like, Okay. I tied my shoes and went to the court. She told me I was one minute late. I'm getting two points' penalty.

"You cannnot be serious."

The 29th-seeded Cibulkova said she returned late because it took her a few minutes to walk from Court 11 to the cooling room.

"It took me, I think, like more than three minutes walking through the people, because there were so many fans and so many people," Cibulkova said. "So I think, the rule is just very strange. I think they should think about it, because it really took me, like, three or four minutes to get on the court.

"And then the umpire, she just told me, Okay, it's gonna be Love-30, and I couldn't believe it. Is it my fault it takes so long to get from where you send me to go to change to the court back? You know, I think it's just not right."

Cibulkova will face Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber next.

The fourth-seeded Kerber fought off Johanna Larsson, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Kerber has won seven of 12 meetings with Cibulkova with the Slovak's last win coming in the 2016 WTA Finals.
