Roger Federer isn’t ready to retire. He was kidding, people…

The Swiss should know better, however.

“Almost time to retire, but not yet,” he joked after taking down Yoshihito Nishioka in round one action on Tuesday night in New York. The word shocked many, but afterwards Federer was quick to clarify that he was just having some laughs.

“For the moment I am still playing,” he told John McEnroe in an interview. “I have no plans to retire.”

During his post-match press conference, Federer further elaborated. “It's a total joke, yes,” he said. “So please don't read into it. Don't even write that word.”

Federer will face Benoit Paire in second-round action at the U.S. Open.
