Roger Federer will miss the US Open, and likely the rest of the 2021 season, as the 20-time major champion has announced that he will undergo another knee surgery, his third since the start of 2020.

“Unfortunately they told me for the medium to long term to feel better I will need surgery,” he said in a video posted to Instagram. “I have to do it.”

Federer says his priority is being healthy later in life, and added that he’d be on crutches for many weeks and out of the game for “many months.”

“I know it’s the right thing to do,” said Federer. “I want to be healthy, I want to be walking around later as well, again. And I want to give myself a glimmer of hope, also, to return in some shape or form. I am realistic – don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is at this age.”
