Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

Rafael Nadal didn't end the 2012 season the way he wanted to, felled by chronic tendinitis of the knee just after his shocking loss at Wimbledon, which caused him to miss the rest of the season and tumble "all the way" to No. 4 in the world.

Nadal's timetable of returning to the court seems to vary by the source and by the day, but when he does return, he'll have a number of prominent career achievements within his reach.

Here's a look at Nadal's 2013 record watch:

Grand Slams:  One more win will give Nadal 12, moving him into third place all-time. He's currently tied with Bjorn Borg with 11. One more Grand Slam final would give him 17, good for fourth place.

Grand Slam Match Wins: He needs six to tie Boris Becker for eighth place and 10 to tie John McEnroe for seventh.

French Open Wins: Nadal has 52 career wins at Roland Garros, third all-time behind Roger Federer (54) and Guillermo Vilas (58).

Clay Court Titles: Nadal has 36 career titles on clay. With four more, he'll tie Thomas Muster (40) for second place.

Rankings: Nadal has been ranked first or second for 343 weeks. If he can climb at least No. 2 again, he can catch Jimmy Connors (356) and Pete Sampras (376).  He's also been in the top four for 395 weeks. He's eight behind Pete Sampras for fourth all-time.
