Fernandez Backs Venus as Future Captain

Venus Williams scored a pair of singles wins to lead the United States to a 4-0 Fed Cup victory over Poland.

U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez believes Venus is a future American leader.

Fernandez endorsed the 35-year-old Venus as a future Fed Cup captain.

"(Venus) she would make a phenomenal captain," Fernandez told the media in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. "She could. As she said, she is very even-keeled. I think she would make a phenomenal captain. She's the best role model and leader. I think when you demand that respect and people look up to you it makes sense."

Williams has played some of her best tennis representing the U.S. in the Olympics and Fed Cup. She owns a 19-2 singles record in Fed Cup competition. Venus owns four Olympic gold medals, including three gold medals in doubles.

Venus swept gold in singles and doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, becoming the first player since Helen Wills Moody in 1924 to win the gold in singles and doubles at the same Olympic Games.

Asked if she would enjoy a future post as Fed Cup captain, Williams replied: "I don't think I could. Mary Joe works really hard.

"You deal with different personalities, so you have to have a lot of the patience and energy and have to be able to inspire. It's not easy shoes to be in."
