U.S. Fed Cup Team Reveal Most Annoying Media Questions

A talent-packed U.S. Fed Cup team enter as big favorites against Poland in their upcoming tie this weekend in Hawaii.

But the team first had some fun revealing what media questions annoy them the most during a pre-event press conference on Wednesday.

Venus Williams leads the all-star team that also includes Sloane Stephens, CoCo Vandeweghe, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

When a local reporter asked the players what question the media asks way too often, they each were quick to respond.

“What's it like playing your sister,” said Williams about the frequent questions she gets about facing her sister Serena Williams on court. “It's like twenty years later. Haven't you seen us play? What do you think? Kind of draw your own conclusion at this point.”

“I’m still surprised people don't know that I wear knee high socks for compression. I feel like I've answered that in every single interview I've given for the last four years, and still people are still surprised that I don't just wear them for fashionable reason. They're actually for compression purposes,” said Mattek-Sands.

“I think the most annoying question has to be what is the state of U.S. women's tennis,” Stephens said. That's all. That's like in every press conference, every interview.”

While Vandeweghe also agreed questions about U.S. women’s tennis get repetitive, she also says questions about how she feels after a loss are not fun to answer either.

“Oh, I feel wonderful. Peachy. Great. Can't wait to get to the hotel room,” said Vandeweghe.

Poland will not have recent Australian Open semifinalist Agnieszka Radwanska on their squad. Poland will field Klaudia Jans-Ignacik, Magda Linette, Paula Kania, and Aljicja Rosolska.

Though U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez knows her team are big favorites, she doesn’t underestimate the Polish team at all.

“You try never to let your guard down. We have been on both ends. We've been the underdogs and have won and been the favorites and lost. You know you have to take that seriously, especially team competition. So you really have to approach it very seriously and treat it like business as usual.”

Stephens is aiming not only to put the U.S. back in the main group but also hopefully have yet another tie on the sunny islands.

“We're excited to try and get back in World Group I and win this tie this week, and excited to be in Hawaii. I would say this is our best tie yet. We have a lot of the motivation to do well here, so we can come back here obviously.”
