Second Serve

This may not be the type of play that rising American Frances Tiafoe can make a living off, but it made for good highlight footage on Tuesday at the Dallas Challenger.

Tiafoe, 18, knocked off top-seeded Aussie Sam Groth, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the 2nd round of the RBC Tennis Championships of Dallas, employing this “fake-and-bake” to great effect to clinch the first set.

Tiafoe didn’t face a break point against Groth, and converted on three of his eight opportunities to sail to victory against the world No. 77. The victory was Tiafoe’s career-best in terms of ranking. Tiafoe went 20-12 at the Challenger-level in 2015 with two finals, but just 1-6 at the ATP-level.
