Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Top seed Kei Nishikori was not happy about losing the first set to Thomaz Bellucci at the Rio Open on Tuesday. The World No.5 would go down by a set and break moments later, but he temporarily rebounded to level in the second set.

(Definitely have to give Kei high marks on this smash, he put everything he had into it.)

But Nishikori's luck has gone bad again of late.

Bellucci kept the pressure on and even survived a break back from Nishikori to notch the 6-4, 6-3 win. The victory was his second Top 5 victory in 20 tries. He will face Thiago Monteiro in the second round.

In other action at Rio on Tuesday, Fabio Fognini exacted some revenge on Tommy Robredo for a loss to the Spaniard last week in Buenos Aires. The Italian triumphed, 6-2, 6-4, despite suffering an upper leg injury in the second set.

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro was also a winner on Tuesday. The southpaw pounded his way past Portugal’s Gastao Elias to win in three, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
