Roger Federer won the Laureus World Sportsman of the year and Comeback of the Year awards, and gave special thanks to his main rival Rafael Nadal in his acceptance speech.

“Back to my rival Rafa, I want to give a shoutout to him,” Federer said. “He had an unbelievable year himself, we had a great battle, and it’s because of a guy like him I feel like I’ve become better player as well. He could very well be here as well tonight and stand here with this award. … because he’s just an incredible player, an incredible friend, an incredible athlete.”

Federer defeated Nadal at the Australian Open last year, and the two players each won two major titles in 2017.

Federer also took time to thank all his past coaches, including Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic, who were in attendance at the ceremony in Monaco.

In a surprising twist, Serena Williams picked up the award for the Sportswoman of the year, even though she had played only one tennis event in 2017. Of course that was the 2017 Australian Open—it was later revealed that Williams won the event while pregnant.
