Second Serve

When it comes to laying one’s body on the line, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina took the cake on Friday in Montpellier. Watch as the 21-year-old Spaniard shows little regard for his life as he goes full stretch on the dive to make this volley during his 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 loss to Egor Gerasimov on Friday.

What a breathtaking dive by Davidovich Fokina, but it came at a cost. The Spaniard cut up his right hand and scraped his right hip. He was patched up courtside and returned to compete, but dropped the final two games to Gerasimov.

Even crazier? Davidovich Fokina dove for another volley in the final game of the match at 30-30, but couldn’t come away with the point.

Gerasimov, who upset Andy Murray in the first round, will move on to face David Goffin in the semis. Roberto Bautista Agut will face Peter Gojowczyk in the top half semifinal.

This year marks the first year in tournament history (since 2010) that a French player will not play the final. Eight of the previous ten stagings in Montpellier have seen a Frenchman raise the trophy.
