Heartbreak for Wawrinka, Jubilation for Fucsovics

Stan Wawrinka had Marton Fucsovics right where he wanted him. After battling back from two sets to love down to level, then battling from a break down (5-3) in the fifth, the Swiss found himself leading a match tiebreak by scores of 6-1, 8-4, and—eventually—9-6, which gave the Swiss three match points to work with.

But the Swiss star failed to convert them and eventually fell to the Hungarian in a five-set thriller, 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6(9).

It was a magical moment for Fucsovics, the World No.55 who has now advanced to at least the third round at his last four major appearances.
For Wawrinka, the 2014 champion who had tested positive for Covid-19 over Christmas, it was a tough pill to swallow.

“I was playing well since the game at 5-6, serving back big shots really well, I was super focused the tiebreak at the end,” he said. “From 6-1 I start to hesitate a little bit the way I was playing. I wanted to put the ball maybe too much in and I'm not going completely for my shot and that's when I start to miss a little bit and it helped him to come back in the match. He was fighting well, he's a tough player, he's a good player and he deserved to win.”

Wawrinka had set big goals for 2021. He told reporters that he hopes to make one big push to try to get his game to elite level before his career ends. At 35, the clock is ticking. But the year is young.

Fucsovics, will move on to face Milos Raonic in the third round.

Wawrinka will regroup and likely surface in Europe where the indoor season will begin later this month.
