A smattering of numbers as we look ahead to the Federer-Wawrinka semifinal...

18-3 Federer holds the strong edge in their head-to-head, and he is 5-1 vs. Wawrinka at Grand Slams. Federer has also won five of the last six against his compatriot.

13-0 Federer has the big advantage against Wawrinka on hard courts. Wawrinka has won just four sets against Federer on hard, and he has dropped the last seven.

3 This year’s Australian Open marks just the third time in history that two Swiss men have reached the semifinals at the same major. 2014 Australian Open and 2015 US Open are the two others. In fact tonight’s battle is just the third all-Swiss clash in men’s singles in any round in Australian Open history.

28 Federer is bidding for his 28th major final; Wawrinka is bidding for his fourth. Federer has a 27-13 record in Grand Slam semifinals, but is only 5-7 in Australian Open semifinals.

669-135 Federer’s record on hard courts. The Swiss maestro has won nearly three times as many as Wawrinka (250-141) on the surface while losing six fewer.

13 Wawrinka is bidding for his 13th consecutive Grand Slam win, the longest such streak of his career.

1974 At 35 years and 174 days, Federer is bidding to become the oldest Grand Slam finalist since Ken Rosewell made the US Open final at age 39 in 1974. He has already become the oldest semifinalist at a major since Jimmy Connors reached the 1991 US Open semis at 39.

3 Wawrinka is bidding to become the third man in the Open Era to have won three major titles after turning 30. Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall each won four major titles after turning 30. Federer has won one since turning 30.

5 Federer has lost five straight semifinals at Melbourne (’11, Djokovic, ’12, Nadal, ’13 Murray, ’14 Nadal, ’16 Djokovic).

17 Federer is hoping to become the first No.17 seed to reach a Grand Slam final since Pete Sampras won the 2002 US Open title as the No.17 seed.

6 Federer is hoping to reach his sixth Australian Open final, which would tie him with Novak Djokovic for the Open Era men’s singles record. He is currently tied with Stefan Edberg and Andy Murray at five Aussie Open finals.
