Second Serve

Stan Wawrinka has, once again, flown into the last eight of a Grand Slam under the radar. One would think that a three-time major champion might gain a little more notice during the first week of a major, but such is the life of a Swiss tennis player that has lived in the shadow of 17-time major champion Roger Federer.

Especially when that 17-time major champion was preparing to face Kei Nishikori with a chance to move deeper in this year’s shattered, battered men’s singles draw.

So when a fan shouted “Come on Roger,” as Wawrinka prepared to serve during his 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 7-6(4) victory over Andreas Seppi, Wawrinka was not surprised in the least.

“He’s not here he’s on Rod Laver,” said Wawrinka with a wry smile as the crowd burst out in laughter.

Will Stan have the last laugh in Melbourne? The No.4 seed tends to heat up as he progresses in draws. He’ll face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a spot in the semifinals and if he gets there he could face his good friend Roger Federer in the semis. He’ll certainly hear a lot more “Come on Roger” calls if that’s the case.
