Second Serve

Stan Wawrinka made his mark in Melbourne—for his five-set comeback victory and the forehand blast he bounced off Martin Klizan’s upper leg.

Down a break in the final set at 3-4, Wawrinka made a stand reeling off three consecutive games to squeeze out a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 triumph in three hours, 24 minutes.

The victory sent the 2014 Australian Open champion into the second round for the 12th consecutive year.

Wawrinka was reeling as the 35th-ranked Klizan was up a break and serving at 4-3, 40-15 in the final.

Turning his hips and shoulders into his shots, Wawrinka began firing with more force. Klizan committed four consecutive forehand errors as the fourth-seeded Swiss broke back for 4-all.

In the next game, Klizan moved into net for a half-volley pick-up and dropped his arms as if conceding the point.

Wawrinka, believing the Slovak would move one way or the other, raced up to the sitter and tattooed a forehand drive down the middle that appeared to catch Klizan in the upper leg, narrowly missing his groin, after ricocheting off his racquet.

A pained Klizan dropped to a squat as Wawrinka climbed over the net to apologize to his fallen foe.

Lashing a backhand winner crosscourt that caught the line, Wawrinka earned match point. A final forehand error from Klizan ended a five-set struggle.

The reigning US Open champion, who hit 60 winners, raised his five-set record to 25-19. Wawrinka will play American Steve Johnson in the second round.
