Caroline Wozniacki says a primary reason she won her maiden major at the Happy Slam is because she's happy.

Wozniacki found joy and peace in her personal life with her engagement to former NBA star David Lee onto the court. She attained a professional pinnacle in Melbourne on Saturday night, edging Simona Halep, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, in a classic Australian Open final to capture her maiden major.

Personal bliss has contributed to professional success, Wozniacki told the WTA St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy tournament today.

"I really think when everything off the court is going well that things on the court go well too," Wozniacki said. "I’m just staying injury-free and happy and things go my way. It’s great.”

Managing her schedule carefully has helped the 27-year-old Dane regain the top spot after injury-induced inactivity sent her ranking spiraling to No. 74 before her run to the 2016 US Open semifinals.

Wozniacki became the first Dane to claim a Grand Slam and regained the world No. 1 ranking exactly six years to the day since she last held the top spot, which is a WTA record for the longest gap between times at the top.

"Sometimes you need to take some extra time off to really get back to 100 percent," Wozniacki said. "I think with the experience I got, I learned sometimes a little more time off is better, also from a mental state.

"Then you just have to figure out what works for you now because, you know, fitness-wise maybe 10 years ago I could maybe push my body more than I can now. At the same time, you know what works and what doesn't. You can kind of do more specific training. I think it's a combination of everything."

The top-seeded Wozniacki will face Russian wild card Anastasia Potapova in her St. Petersburg opener.
