Second Serve

Andrea Petkovic encountered some serious physical difficulties on Monday, and eventually was forced to retire from the match in the eighth game of the second set.

After a long rally at 3-4, 30-30 in the second set, Petkovic tumbled to the court and lay there as play was stopped. She was able to eventually move to the side of the court where medical staff attended to her, before she retired.

"It was heat related," Petkovic told media after the match. "I had the flu last week, so probably my body was more prone to exhaustion."

Petkovic said she was proud that she summoned the courage to play and go for the win on Monday.

"Today I think I was really tough, I was just trying my best as much as I could. I literally left it all out there and tried my best as long as I could -- unfortunately I hit the wall at one point."

Begu advances and will face either Petra Kvitova or Magdalena Rybarikova in the second round.
