Sania Mirza is back—for all the right reasons. The former World No.1 and six-time major doubles champion (3 women’s, 3 mixed) says her comeback is motivated by a higher cause. She wants to show other mothers that they too can do anything they set their sights on.

“One of the reasons to make this comeback was to tell women that you can follow your dreams,” said Mirza in an exclusive interview with Simon Briggs of the Telegraph. “Just because you have a baby, you don’t have to sacrifice your entire life. You can still be a good mother [while working].”

Mirza won the doubles title with Nadia Kichenok at Hobart last week and she hopes it is just the beginning of a successful comeback. After giving birth to her son Izhaan in October of 2018, Mirza had to shed over 20 kilos to get back to her playing weight.

Mirza has entered the doubles draw unseeded with Kichenok (they will play Xinyun Han and Lin Zhu of China in the first round), and she is reportedly entering the mixed doubles draw with Rohan Bopanna. Mirza and Bopanna finished fourth at the 2016 Olympic Games with Bopanna. “I still think I have tennis left in me,” the 33-year-old said. “If you ask me whether all that training was worth it, the answer is ‘Yes, 100 per cent.’”
