Chris Evert Says Serena Will be a “Wreck” this Summer

Serena Williams nabbed her second “Serena Slam” on Saturday at Wimbledon, defeating Garbine Muguruza, 6-4, 6-4, to win her fourth consecutive major for a second time. But the party isn’t over for the world No. 1. She’ll begin the march to the Calendar Slam now with her sights set on New York and becoming the first player since Steffi Graf (1988) to run the table at the majors for a calendar year.

18-time major champion Chris Evert believes that it’s going to be crazy for Williams.

“It’s going to be a different pressure,” said Evert. “At the US Open, she’s going to be a wreck. I guarantee you, she’s going to be so nervous. The Calendar Slam has more credibility and very few women have done it.”

But Evert thinks being a wreck won’t stop Williams from creating more history.

“She’ll make Margaret Court’s 24,” she said. “I have no doubt she’s going to pass Steffi. If she plays this way she can win Wimbledon another year or two for sure. I think she has three or four [Grand Slam titles] left in her. The way she’s playing—she’s healthy and she’s emotionally and mentally focused. She’s competitive, and if she gets near 24, she’s not going to let that go. She’s not going to retire at 23—trust me.”

She added: “There’s no doubt that she can match Steffi, beat Steffi, and I think she has a good chance to match Margaret, too.”
