Florian Mayer Can Still Dazzle, Andreas Seppi Can Still Smile



Germany’s Florian Mayer is known for his leaping two-handed backhand more than any other shot, but on Thursday in Hamburg he busted out the one-hander when he found himself in big trouble against Italy’s Andreas Seppi on this point.

Lo and behold, it worked, and Mayer ended up picking off Seppi’s next forehand from no-man’s land to put a climactic finish on this extraordinary 32-stroke rally.

It was all enough to put a smile on Seppi’s face, but the 4th-seeded Italian had the last laugh as he pulled out the 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory to reach the quarterfinals.
