Second Serve

Novak Djokovic will play his first event since falling in the third round at Wimbledon this summer, opening his bid to capture the Rogers Cup crown in Toronto with a second-round matchup with either Gilles Muller or Dmitry Tursunov.

Flashback: Murray Ends Run of Futility vs. Djokovic in 2015 Rogers Cup Final

The 29-year-old Serb is a three-time champion in Canada, having locked down the title in 2007, 2011 and 2012.

The tournament was hit hard by withdrawals last week as defending champion Andy Murray pulled out, along with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

If the seeds hold, Djokovic’s path to the final would be as follows:

Round two (after bye): Muller or Tursunov
Round three: Benoit Paire
Quarterfinal: Tomas Berdych
Semifinal: Raonic
Final: Wawrinka

Other lurking players in Djokovic’s half are 10th-seeded Gael Monfils, who will play for the Citi Open title in D.C. on Sunday, as well as 7th-seeded David Goffin.

Raonic, a finalist at the Rogers Cup in 2013, could face Alexander Zverev in the second round and either Monfils or Goffin in the quarterfinals.

In the lower half of the draw, second-seeded Stan Wawrinka would face sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals if the seeds hold, while eighth-seeded Marin Cilic and third-seeded Kei Nishikori would clash in the quarterfinals if the seeds hold.

Notable first-rounders at the Rogers Cup include:

Taylor Fritz vs. Ivo Karlovic
Joao Sousa vs. Gael Monfils
Fabio Fognini vs. Steve Johnson
